The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012)

Here's the thing about "Twilight": you either love it or hate it. Call me crazy, but I've enjoyed watching this over-the-top saga over the past four years for the unintentional humor and laughably bad acting it's provided. So when I went to see the fifth and final installment of the "Twilight" series with a few of my friends, we all expected to laugh our butts off like we usually have. And while we pretty much ended up doing just that, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this film a lot more than its predecessors.
Sure, the screenplay is just as heavy-handed and overly melodramatic as ever, but it caught me off guard in ways I never thought it would. The performances were better, the pacing was much lighter, and most surprising of all, I didn't find Kristen Stewart annoying as Bella Swan. In fact, it was pretty cool seeing her loosen up and show some actual emotion for once. As for the rest of the cast, Robert Pattinson as Edward gave me a good chuckle as always, while Taylor Lautner delivered a better-than-usual performance as the brooding werewolf Jacob (but that's not really saying much...at all). Mackenzie Foy's Renesmee barely got any lines, but she still did a decent job. I ended up enjoying Michael Sheen as the cartoonish vampire villain Aro more than anyone else, but that's because he actually put more solid effort into his role than the rest of the cast. But I digress. After all the mindless drama and forgettable introductions of side characters, the flick all leads up to one of the campiest, most outrageously over-the-top action sequences I've ever seen. It's so ridiculously nonsensical and strangely amazing that it nearly makes up for all the blandness we have to trudge through first. And I'll admit, I did not see that twist ending coming. Sure, it wasn't quite the most ingenious way to end the franchise, but at least it genuinely surprised me. Overall, there's no doubt that this is the absolute best "Twilight" flick in the series. Yes, the story is pretty weak and most of the characters are still as good-looking yet emotionless as before, but when it comes to over-the-top action and unintentionally hysterical dialogue, that's where the movie truly delivers. I can't say that my friends enjoyed it the same way I did, but I actually had a blast with "Breaking Dawn - Part 2", at least during the awesome final half. I'm gonna miss the guilty pleasure entertainment this supernatural love series has provided me with, despite all its sappy romantic clichés and obnoxious protagonists. I may be the farthest thing from a Twihard there is, but I reasonably enjoyed this finale just like any other huge fan of the franchise (probably not in the same way, but it was still a fun ride nonetheless). Case in point, if you've been a "Twilight" devotee since the very beginning, this final adventure with Bella and Edward will easily satisfy you. If not, it's still a decent movie that's worth watching for anyone looking for some vampire/werewolf drama and/or unintentional laughs.
